Full Session Description (as long as you would like):
In 2014 the Colégio Sagrado Coração de Maria - Lisboa (CSCM-LX),
http://www.cscm-lx.pt/, has participated in the first Portuguese CanSat competition (
http://cansatportugal.org/), with a team called TugaSat. The participation of TugaSat in the competition went very well, and namely the team was awarded the third place, which is a position that much honours us. The CanSat competition challenges a team of high-school students to build a satellite that must be fit into an enclosure with the size of a refrigerant can. The satellite is then sent to an altitude of 1 kilometre, by a small rocket, starting then its descent in a controlled manner, through a recovery system like a parachute. During the descent, the CanSat must transmit back to Earth, every second, sensor data like temperature and atmospheric pressure, by radio.
For the 2015 competition the CSCM-LX is participating again, with a new team, completely constituted by new students, since all the TugaSat students are now in the University. In any case the Tutor responsible for the team will remain the same: Telma Espírito Santo. The goals for the 2015 competition shall be to capitalize the participation of 2014 by integrating all lessons learnt, and in this way improving the results of the project, not necessarily only the final position of the team (since a third place was already a very good result taking into consideration all the other excellent teams), but especially the return that the project will bring to its participants (Tutor + Students of the Team) and to the CSCM-LX. By return to the CSCM-LX we mean that we wish to give more visibility to our participation in the CanSat competition to all our students and friends, namely by doing internal publicising and presentations, and involving more students in the key moments of the CanSat development, like the parachute and antenna testing.
Our proposal to this conference is to present the 2014 team, its achievements, and the technical challenges they had to face to achieve a 3rd place in the competition, and then presenting the 2015 team, and how they will work the lessons learnt from the 2014 participation to reach now the 1st position, which is the only that gives access to the European competition one month later.
