This session focuses on several common misconceptions that hinder the spread of innovative ideas in education and offers a few examples of education MVPs (acronym to be defined in the session) that were used to share and spread new practices.
This session will demonstrate simple, yet effective ways that new media tools can aid differentiating instruction in your classroom. From constructing online portfolios to electronic literature circles, Web 2.0 allows for students at any level to engage you’re your curriculum. Building on over 15 years of research in classrooms, Dr. Kist will demonstrate a variety of strategies for transforming your classroom to one in which each student is met with engaging literacies, whether via virtual role-playing or simulations to research projects constructed on a wiki. Collected from classrooms across the world, these strategies can be implemented in a wide range of classrooms, K-12, from the technologically barren to the technologically advanced, and that organizing your classroom using these new platforms do not take time away from “important” classroom activities, but can rather be integral to teaching each student in a meaningful way.

This session will cover all the basic topics needed to start collaborating across networks and developing proficiency with the tools of technology. As a classroom teacher, you cannot create your own educational system. However, you can change what is going on in your classroom. This session will show you how to help your students become connected leaners. Teaching without textbooks, facilitates learning in a student-centered environment. It is a way to make students' voice count. Student participation means letting the students make the important decisions, like what to learn and how to learn it.

This session will explain how to use Skype and Twitter and also how students’ blogs can be used to get in contact with students and teachers from other parts of the world. Questions and challenges are set by the students with help from the teacher. Students offer feedback to fellow students. The goal is self-paced differentiated learning where every student can progress individually and the teacher can keep track of this. Technology makes it possible to learn in an authentic real-world practice, modelling real-world problems.

Full Session Description (as long as you would like): As a computer literacy teacher, the currency of my material is very important. Textbooks can’t keep up with the latest changes to social media, threats such as HeartBleed or incorporate the excellent material that is constantly being published on the web. It’s also an organizational nightmare to keep track of all the multimedia – videos, images, articles – that you might want to include in your lessons. This presentation will share ideas on how to develop your own classroom wiki to take advantage of media, organize your teaching and even facilitate student collaboration. I will show examples of my classroom and school resource wiki and demonstrate how to go about setting up your own site.

Students learn best when they are able adjust how they learn, what they learn, where they learn and how fast they learn. Videos may help students study the content anywhere on their own pacing, follow how they progress, and revise when needed. Fast pacers can finish the core material and go for extra, while slow pacers have their time to master the content, which means efficient use of time and differentiated learning. Videos act like a second teacher in the class, hence teachers can spend more individual time with each student for feedback and monitor student progress.

Websites / URLs Associated with Your Session:

In this session I will discuss my own “current” personal framework for developing eLeanring experiences which is constantly evolving. I hope this presentation will also be an open discussion between me and the participants. I will begin by discussing topics based on current trends and research such as:

online students are essentially learning alone yet they have a desire for personal connections

benefits of authentic learning

recommended types of online interaction

differences between inventions and innovations

need for adding value to eLearning experiences

I currently work on a team of 5 instructional designer who pioneered in offering online education in 1999 with 6 graduate courses and 70 students. We now have about 550+ online courses with about 9 thousand students and regularly see 300 new students each year. As of 2014 our online students represent 50 U.S. states and 64 countries around the world. Students can currently earn 23 fully online degrees and 5 certificates. We also offer 4 undergraduate degree completion programs.

Gayle Purdue said, "We aren't just teaching students specific skills - we are strengthening their capacity to be lifelong learners". To do this we need to respect their needs and requests. As teachers we are always running after improving ways of teaching for the sake of offering better education to our students or rather learners. Yet have we asked ourselves if our "Learners" agree to the procedures we take?! Do they see using technology in learning the same way we do? Do we need to keep their desires into consideration? Will this bring about better results? Let's go ahead and check the recent research results and see what you think?

Websites / URLs Associated with Your Session:
